Granted, I don't use makeup. However, I can certainly appreciate what women must go through in trying different products or looks. I also have an appreciation for facial recognition software and that's what MakeUp uses. If you think about it, when you bring a photo into this app it has to figure out where your different features are to be able to apply the makeup in the right places.
Start with an existing photo, the built-in model photo or take one with your iPhone camera. Once you have the photo up you can either apply makeup to the eyes, skin or lips.

Of course it's best to start with a picture of someone that doesn't have any makeup on at all. In this example I decided to apply Lipstick.

Once I chose the color I wanted to see the app started calculating how and where to apply it using the built-in facial recognition algorithms. Then I was able to see a before and after display to see what the new color looks like:

The Bottom Line
While MakeUp makes good use of the technology and is easy to use, I've floated this app by a few women that I know and they all asked "why?" I think women (and again, I said "I think") actually enjoy shopping for makeup and having makeup professionally applied during the process. I also think the app would be more useful if you could choose between know brands of makeup. This way you could then go to the store and buy the exact color/brand that you saw in the app. So while this app does what it claims, it may have limited appeal in the real world. You can download MakeUp here from the App Store:
Ladies Sound Off
So I'm really curious, ladies is this kind of electronic makeup testing application appealing to you or not? Would you use something like this and if so how?

MakeUp
MakeUp allows you to try on makeup without having to physically do so in the store. You can either use your own photo or the sample model.

All info was collected on 29th December, 2009 when the app was reviewed.

Seems like something a teen might like. It holds zero appeal for me, though. Now, if it could recognize the products I use ship automatically ship refills (at the lowest price) when I'm about to run out, that'd be useful, LOL!
Ok… I'm way too low maintenance to bother w/makeup that much. I know what looks good and have stuck w/the same products/shades for the last 10+ years. But if I had an app that would let me see how I'd look w/different shades… or try different approaches (ie: the "smoky eye") or even new products, I'd be all over it.
But first, I'd need an iPhone, I guess. ;D
I don't really see the point unless you have actual colours of real brands. But then I rarely wear makeup so I suppose that I am not really the person to ask. I would much rather spend my money on gadgets
