myPhoneDesktop

As good as the on screen keyboards  may be on the iPhone/iPod touch and now the larger iPad, I don't like to enter large amounts of text on them. The iPad is great, but I could never see creating a text heavy document on it without using an external keyboard. Well if you have a Mac or PC, then you already have an external keyboard. Sure you can sync notes, Contacts, Calendar entries, etc. from your computer to your mobile device, but what if you want to send something quickly and just once?

myPhoneDesktop creates a wireless sync between your computer and your iPhone/iPhone touch/iPad

It's very easy to setup and use. Once you install the App on your mobile device you create a free account and turn on Push Notifications. Now you can either download the desktop version of the App for your Mac or PC and log in with the same account user name and password that you created or log in to the www.myphonedesktop.com site. Then you can type or copy and paste the text you'd like to send to your device and click the Show button. You'll get a Push Notification on your device and once the App launches you can then use the text in any App you want via Copy and Paste or directly via the Share menu. So if you have a long complicated URL that you need to go to your iPad, or you want to send a long SMS message on your iPhone, or you want to add a photo to a contact on your iPod touch, you can create this content on your computer and send it right to your device over the air.

You can get myPhoneDesktop here from the App Store:  myPhoneDesktop ? Phone on your Desktop

here's the Mac version of the App

Once the text is received on your device you can use it by Adding it to a Contact or just Copying it.

myPhoneDesktop

myPhoneDesktop allows you to send text and images to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch from your desktop or a web browser. Great for saving time not having to enter large amounts of text on the device itself.

  1. Why not email the information to yourself instead?

    • You could, but this method is faster.

      • @Terry @Jeff: You could email it but only some info. You can not initiate a phone call or send SMS via emai. Plus myPhoneDesktop global shortcuts (Command+C+C or Ctrl+C+C) are a life savior. If I need directions to a meeting, I navigate (on my desktop) to google map, get address, press Command+C+C and in seconds all info on my iPhone, plus myPhoneDesktop will launch iPhone Maps app so now I have address, directions and route info. All in seconds. Can I do this via email – yes, but it would be a pain :)

Evernote allows you do this (and bunch other stuff) for FREE, without installing any desktop software.

Any text you type in evernote web site will show up instantly in evernote app (free) on iphone.

    • I have Evernote to (nice App), but it’s not the same and doesn’t work in the same way. Glad you’re happy with Evernote.

    • @Tony : myPhoneDesktop and Evernote can not be compared. They are two completely different applications in what they do (features and functionality). Also, (I do use Evernote quite heavily) to take any advantage of Evernote features (PDF searching, image recognition, etc) – one must pay $5 per month. And, on the same subject – myPhoneDesktop is $1.99 one time! after that their Desktop (Mac, Windows, Linux) + Web + communication is FREE.

  2. Hi Terry,

Nice review (as always)! I am glad myPhoneDesktop found its way into bestappsite.com (which is one of my main sources for new, cool and must have apps). I have been using myPhoneDesktop for a couple of weeks now and it is quite a helpful productivity app. There are many uses and yes, as Jeff said, you can email any stuff to yourself, but first – you need an access to email and second – myPhoneDesktop is a different app because it not only send info to my iPhone or my new shiny iPad :) but it executes an action (Call, SMS, save image, etc). For example: I am constantly on the road, driving. So my secretary in the office can initiate a phone call with the client on my behalf. First – she logs in into my myPhoneDesktop account (well, as my personal secretary she does have access to my email, etc so there is no problem here) then she sends me quick message “Margaret, I will connect you with Mr. Smith in a sec”. Message comes via push notification to my iPhone and in a sec my iPhone start dialing automatically and I am talking to my client. I do not have to neither remember client’s phone number or take my eyes of the road to dial the number. By the time I get to the office all my phone calls are made. Wonderful. And also, it happens to me in a number of times when I am either at the client office or at the airport kiosk – there is no email, so I just start myPhoneDesktop web client and send what ever url, picture, notes, etc directly to my iPhone.

    Anyway, love the app.
P.S. I use Evernote as well and these 2 apps are completely different in their functionality! there is no way to compare one to the other.
Its like to compare Photoshop and Illustrator – yes, one can draw a line in both apps, but that pretty much it :)

    Thanks Terry!
    Keep up the great work.
    P.S.P.S Love your CS5 review.

I use pastefire, which seems to have been copied here…. which has been there for a while and which does the same thing. In addition it is free.

I would disagree. Its like saying that MS Word was copied form Notepad because they both type text. So notepad is better because it is free. :) LOL myPhoneDesktop is $1.99 (common, my morning coffee is more expensive) plus multiplatform support, full features web client, comprehensive bookmarklet, Integration with third party apps like Address Book and Launchbar for Mac, ability to import contact form outlook or from apple AB, system wide shortcuts, etc, etc… and feature list a bit more impressive then pastefire (at least for my taste). Well, just my 2 cents…
