15 Must Have Summer Travel Apps

Compliments of iStockphoto.com

It’s summer and many of you will be hitting the road or the airways on your summer travel excursions. I figured it was time to update my “Must Have Travel Apps.” Realizing that some of you will travel by land, some by air and some internationally, I’ve divided the list up into those three categories.

Land/Sea Travel

Navigon USA

If you’re traveling by car whether you’re driving cross country or using a rental car at your destination, then you should check out my favorite Voice Turn-by-Turn GPS Navigation App. Navigon continues to raise the bar by constantly adding cool new features.

iTunes

Expedia

This is definitely one of the best apps for finding and booking hotels for the area that you’re traveling to. Great interface on iPad and iPhone.

iTunes

AroundMe

AroundMe is a must have for finding restaurants, ATMs, supermarkets, bars, pharmacies, gas stations, etc. This geo based App has been one of my favorites for a long time.

iTunes

Taxi Magic

Getting a taxi while you’re at the airport or hotel is pretty easy. However, if you take one to a meeting or shopping center, it may not always be easy to get one for the return trip. Taxi Magic allows you to book taxis right in the App. If you’re in one of their covered areas you are booking right with the dispatch system and you can even schedule one in advance. Once the ride is over you can even pay with the app.

iTunes

Ship Mate

While this App isn’t the official Carnival Cruise App, it’s probably the next best thing. You can learn all about your ship, see a schedule of activities and even communicate with other cruisers.

iTunes

Air Travel

Flightrack Pro

Flighttrack Pro is the ultimate flight management App. You can enter flights manually or sync with your TripIt account. You get push notifications of gate changes, cancellations, delays, etc. This app has saved my butt on more than one occasion.

iTunes

TripIt

TripIt for iPad

TripIt (combined with a free account on tripit.com) is the one place that pulls my whole trip together. All of my confirmation numbers, hotel contact numbers, addresses, directions, etc. are there in one spot.

iTunes

Gate Guru

Gate Guru has really come along way since it was first introduced. This app lets you know what amenities the airport you’re in/close to has and more importantly what’s near your gate. Connections can be tight and with Gate Guru you can quickly figure out what’s near by and what’s not.

iTunes

World Clock

World Clock will not only help you keep your various time zones straight, but it will even help you when scheduling meetings (conference calls) across multiple time zones.

iTunes

Your Airline’s App

Most Major Airlines now have their own App. This means that you can usually check in for your flight and display your electronic boarding pass right in the App. Even though I’m not a frequent flyer on American Airlines, I think they have the best one. C’mon Delta, yours could be so much better!

American Airlines, Delta, United, Southwest Airlines

International Travel

XE Currency

If you’re traveling to a different country one of the 1st things you’re going to want to check is the current exchange rate. XE Currency is one of my favorite Apps for viewing multiple currencies and doing calculations all at once.

iTunes

Tipping Guide

Here in the US tipping is pretty standard. In some countries tipping isn’t required/expected and in others it’s at different rates. Tipping Guide covers many countries and lets you know what’s customary.

iTunes

Skype

International roaming can be outrageously expensive and not everyone has an iOS device to do FaceTime. Skype allows you to make Skype to Skype calls for free and you can even make low cost international call.

Skype for iPhone iTunes

Skype for iPadiTunes

Travisa Visa

Of course you need a valid passport when going from country to country, but do you need a Visa? The Travisa Visa App answers that question in great detail. It also lets you know what’s required to get one. It’s one of the most important travel apps I have.

iTunes

Google Translate

Traveling to another country typically means also dealing with different languages. As much as I wished I spoke the language of every country I visit, the sad reality is that i don’t. In most tourist areas it’s usually not a problem, but once you go off the grid the chances of someone speaking English drop significantly. I use Google Translate at times when I need to get a few words vocalized in the native tongue.

iTunes

portfolioforipad

Best Portfolio App for iPad: You’re the Pundit

I have tried quite a few different portfolio Apps on iPad to display my photography work and quite frankly I’m not really thrilled or blown away by any of them. While I wait for my buddy Shaun to build the ultimate portfolio App that I’ve always wanted, I continue to use Portfolio for iPad as it has “most” of what I’m looking for and they’ve submitted a Retina Display update that’s currently waiting for approval by Apple.

My must have criteria for a good portfolio App

  • Easy to get images in and replace them from time to time! <-this is where most fall appart quickly. Dropbox support is a must, but a direct Lightroom tie would be the ultimate.
  • Ability to add branding (your logo)
  • Slideshows with music that can be self running or manually swiped
  • Ability to assign different songs/playlists to different galleries
  • Retina Display ready or coming out with an update very soon
  • Multiple galleries and hidden galleries
  • Both portrait and landscape support

The above list represents my bare minimum in features that I want/need. Portfolio for iPad has all fo the above, but I wonder if I’m missing something since I haven’t looked at these apps in a while. If you’re asking “well if Portfolio for iPad has these things then why are you looking?” that’s a good question. While Portfolio for iPad has the features I want, I want something that is more easily updated or sync’d. Right now let’s say I have 24 images in my Beauty portfolio. If I want to add a new one and delete an old one, the process is completely manual. I have to check my website or LR to see which one is the oldest and should be deleted from the App and then I have to go find the new one via a Dropbox import. Then I have to manually move it to the front of the group. While this is not the end of the world, I have Lightroom Publishing this Collection to a Dropbox folder. Why can’t Portfolio for iPad just sync to that folder as well, picking up any changes and removing images that are no longer there? It can’t be that hard!!!

BOOKS

Audible

Audible for iPhone

I quite enjoy listening to the great audiobooks made by Audible and have been a subscriber for quite a while. Their app has a full audiobook store, allowing you to download new books without being at your computer. It also contains all your purchases and some fun stats of your listening habits.

BUSINESS

Adobe Connect Mobile

Does your company hold meetings online using Adobe Connect? If so you definitely want to get the iPad and iPhone app, allowing you to tune in to meetings from wherever you are without having to have your computer with you. Should you wish, you can also participate in the meeting right from the app.

Get it here from the iTunes

Analytics HD

If you're a website owner you want to be able to keep track of your site's statistics. Google Analytics is the most popular analytics solution right now and Analytics HD lets you check your stats on your iPad (with an iPhone version available separately).

CardMunch

CardMunch allows you to take a picture of a business card and then upload it to a service that will convert it to text, proof read it and deliver it wirelessly back to the App. From there you can add it to your contacts. Amazing and it's FREE! No more typing, no more OCR errors.

20 Must Have Apps For The New iPhone, iPad or iPod touch User

Camera+ 2.0

If you just got your 1st iPhone, iPad or iPod touch then chances are you're looking for some great Apps to have. Although I have literally hundreds of Apps loaded on my iPhone and iPad, I do have a recommended list of "Must Have Apps". I'm keeping the list to 20 which means that there are still dozens that I would recommend, but don't want to overwhelm you with here. Stay tuned for our Top 100 Apps of 2011! In the meantime these are 20 Apps that you should look at sooner rather than later. In most cases the Apps I'm listing today are Universal Apps and therefore work natively on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch including taking advantage of the iPad screen size. However, there are some Apps that will work on iPad, but don't take advantage of the screen size. This being the case if the App is a Universal App I will put a (+) in front of the download link so that you know it works across all iOS devices. In no particular order:

Camera+

Camera+ (pictured above) is my favorite iPhone camera special effects App. You can not only snap photos with this App, but you can really create some very cool effects, including a nice HDR look and feel.

You can get Camera+ for $0.99 here from the iTunes

PS Express

Adobe Photoshop Express for iOS

Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard photo manipulation App. Photoshop Express allows for some basic editing beyond what's included in iOS 5 and a few special effects and borders as well. Best of all for the time being it's FREE.

+ You can get Photoshop Express for Free here from the Adobe Photoshop Express - Adobe Systems Incorporated

Snapseed

While Photoshop Express above does a fine job with basic edits and exposure adjustments, Snapseed is much more robust. Apple also named it iPad App of the Year for 2011. There are certainly more full featured editors out there, but Snapseed definitely has an easier interface than most and unique features that don't require any masking.

+ You can get Snapseed for $4.99 here from the iTunes

Taxi Magic

I travel for a living and therefore I use a large number of Apps in the Travel category. One of the coolest travel Apps is Taxi Magic. This location based App will show you the Taxi companies that service the area you're in and let you dial them directly. However, where the cool factor really shines is when you're in an area that supports "Direct Dispatch". When you're in one of these metropolitan areas you'll be able to book your taxi directly from the App, see when it's been dispatched, know the taxi cab number and driver's name as well as see where it is on the integrated map. Once your ride is over you'll be able to pay the fare directly from the App as well if you choose.

You can get Taxi Magic for Free here from the iTunes

Evernote

Evernote is the end all be all notes App for iOS that allows you to sync notes and documents with the cloud. While I'm not really an Evernote fan (the built-in Notes App with iCloud syncing serves me well), it's one of those Apps that If I don't list someone will say "how can you not list Evernote?" :-)

+ You can get Evernote for Free here from the iTunes

Red Laser

Red Laser is an old favorite that keeps getting better. First off Red Laser lets you scan the barcodes on retail products that you're thinking of buying and show you the online prices for that item so that you can price compare on the spot. It also offers "Local" search so you can see if a nearby store has it cheaper. This latest version also has support for QR codes. Yes, this one App does it all and it's FREE. However, it's not a universal App, so if you're looking for a just a good QR scan App then I'd recommend "Scan" which is Universal.

You can get Red Laser for Free here from the iTunes

Twitter, Facebook,  Google+ & Flipboard

If you're into social media then chances are you're going to want the native App for the social media network that you use the most. Therefore, I've listed the most popular ones. Flipboard gives you a visual view of your Facebook and Twitter timelines as well as great photos on the internet and RSS news feeds.

+ You can get Twitter for Free here from the iTunes

+ You can get Facebook for Free here from the iTunes

You can get Google+ for Free here from the iTunes

+ You can get Flipboard for Free here from the iTunes

Delivery Status touch

I've been using Delivery Status touch to track packages on my iDevices for a long time. This App is great! You can track packages from all the major carriers simultaneously complete with push notifications and a built-in Map to see where your packages are. This latest version allows you to scan the tracking label for the items you're shipping to cut down on tedious data entry.

+ You can get Delivery Status Touch for $3.99 here from the iTunes

Flixster

Flixster is a great multi-purpose Movie and TV App. The main reason I use it is to see show times for my local theater as well as trailers. However, you can also use it to add DVDs to your Netflix queue and see which movies are coming to disc and when. Once you watch a movie you can rate/review it and automatically share that rating on your Facebook or Twitter stream.

+ You can get Flixster for Free here from the iTunes

Dropbox

Dropbox.com is my favorite cloud based storage service. With your FREE Dropbox account you can store up to 2GB's of data. The Free Dropbox App lets you easily access your files as well as share them. Also many Apps allow you to use Dropbox to back up and share data.

+ You can get Dropbox for Free here from the iTunes

Navigon

The Built-in Maps App is pretty cool, but it lacks voice turn-by-turn directions. There are a few good GPS Voice turn-by-turn Apps out there on the App Store, However, my top pick is Navigon. They offer a variety of different Apps depending on how much coverage you need in terms of driving territory. You can buy one just for your region or the entire country. The latest 2.0 version also allows you to just download the maps for the areas you're going to be in, which reduces the amount of storage space required significantly.

+ You can get the Navigon Apps (currently on Sale) starting at $19.99 here from the NAVIGON AG

PhotoSync

With the introduction of iCloud and Photostream Apple has made it a little easier to sync photos between your iOS devices and your computer. However, it's all or nothing at this point. If you prefer to send specific photos to specific devices, then Photosync is your answer. This App allows you to wirelessly send photos back and forth from your iOS devices and your computer. I use Photosync all the time!

+ You can get PhotoSync for $1.99 here from the iTunes

Flashlight.*

If you have an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s you've got a very bright LED flash that you can use to take photos/videos in low light situations. The Flashlight* App lets you turn on this light and use it as a Flashlight whenever you need it. There are several Flashlight Apps on the App Store, but this one is Free and works great!

You can get Flashlight.* for Free here from the iTunes

CardStar

I use CardStar all the time when I'm out and about. Not only do I have all my loyalty cards in it for easy scanning at most place, but I also put my frequent flier/frequent stay numbers in there too for easy access when I'm checking in for a flight or hotel.

You can get CardStar for iPhone/iPod touch for Free here from the iTunes

You can get CardStar for iPad for Free here from the iTunes

ScannerPro

The camera on your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s does a great job with photos, but it can also take pictures of documents, receipts, etc. However, rather than just having a photo of the document, many times I need a PDF and I need it to be cropped nicely to the document, deskewed and good quality. ScannerPro does all this for me including the ability to email the document or upload it to my Dropbox account. With this App I rarely use my desktop scanner anymore. It also handles multiple page documents.

You can get ScannerPro for $6.99 here from the iTunes

1Password Pro

Hopefully you're not one of those people that uses a single password for everything that you do because it's easy to remember it. The sad truth is that there are lots of people out there that have insecure passwords and use the same insecure (easy to remember) passwords for everything they do. I actually used to be one of those people and as identity theft cases began to rise, I decided that it was time to change my ways. Now I use 1Password both for my computer and my iDevices. This app keeps track of al my passwords for all my various accounts, websites, etc. and is secured by top level encryption. I enter the one master password and can easily look up any password I need. Also because it syncs with Dropbox, I can update passwords anywhere and they are sync'd everywhere. I couldn't imagine life without 1Password.

+ You can get 1Password Pro for $8.99 here from the iTunes

Skype

Your iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPad 2 and iPod touch (4th & 5th gen) device includes FaceTime for video chatting. While FaceTime is great and built-in, it only works over WiFi and only with other iOS devices or Macs. When I want to do video chatting over 3G or with other platforms such as Android or Windows, I prefer to use Skype. Skype is a well known App for making free Skype to Skype calls and now free video calls from Mobile Devices.  Arguably the quality is not as good as FaceTime, but Skype will allow you to video chat when there is no WiFi hotspot available and with more people that don't have Apple gear.

You can get Skype for iPhone/iPod touch for FREE here from the iTunes

You can get Skype for iPad for FREE here from the iTunes

Documents To Go Premium

Your iOS device can display many formats such as Word, Excel, PDF, etc., but it doesn't allow you to edit them natively. Apple sells Pages, Numbers and Keynote and they do allow editing of Word, Excel and Powerpoint files. However, if you're looking for a more direct way to create and edit MS Office documents, then Documents To Go is the App for you.

+ You can get Documents to Go Premium for $16.99 here from the iTunes

Pandora Radio

Having a built-in iPod in my iPhone and IPad is great, but there are times I want to listen to music that I don't necessary own yet. That's where Pandora Radio comes in. Unlike regular broadcast radio, Pandora Radio lets you create your own "radio stations" based on the artist or songs that you like. As you give songs thumbs up or thumbs down it gets better about playing the kind of music you like. I opted for a paid account to be completely commercial free. Pandora Radio can also stream to your AirPlay speakers.

+ You can get Pandora Radio for Free here from the iTunes

Angry Birds

I also can't create one of these lists without mentioning one of the most addictive games on the App Store. I have spent more hours than I care to admit playing Angry Birds and what I like most is that the developer constantly comes out with free updates adding more levels.

You can get Angry Birds for iPhone and iPod touch for $0.99 here from the iTunes

You can get Angry Birds HD for iPad for $4.99 here from the iTunes

20 “Best” Apps for the New iPhone 4s Owner

Here at Best App Site we regularly review and recommend the "Best" Apps on the App Store. The team thought it would be a good idea to give you some recommendations for some of the Best Apps for your New iPhone 4s. These recommendations are especially handy if this is your first iPhone.

Terry Recommends

CardStar

iTunes

CardStar is an App that I use several times a week. It lets you store all of your frequent buyer club tags electronically on your iPhone. Once you arrive at the checkout line of say a CVS drugstore, just launch the App tap on your CVS card and the cashier can usually scan the barcode right on your iPhone. Also if you goto that location often you can even have CardStar remember it  based on the Location and it will automatically bring up the right card.

Skype

iTunes

Your iPhone 4s has a front facing camera and FaceTime. While I love the quality and integrated nature of FaceTime, I find that I don't use it as much as I would like to because it requires that both parties be on WiFi. If you're out and about and want to do a quick video chat and there is no WiFi you're out of luck. That's why I highly recommend Skype! Skype is universal, let's you talk and see other Skype users for Free, is great for making international calls to regular phone numbers and best of all it works over WiFi or 3G. You can of course Skype with people that using Skype on their computers or other platforms.

Reeder

iTunes

Reeder is hands down my favorite RSS Reader for my daily news feeds. It syncs with my Google RSS feeds so that when I read a post on one device it's automatically marked read on all my other devices. Great sharing options built-in too.
