App News

I've released a minor update to my "The World of Terry White" App. This update adds a new Contacts tab with more links and updates a few icons. Unfortunately for whatever reason it got published as a new App instead of a simple update to the existing one. Not sure why this happened (perhaps a naming snafu from AppMakr and the App Store). So in order to get the new version, you'll need to delete your current "Terry White" app and download the new one here. Yep, it's still FREE :)

You've been able to, since the launch of the iPhone, download apps and media over 3G as long as they weren't over 10MB in size. This is now changing. Apple has now raised the limit on App Store and iTunes Store downloads over 3G up to 20MB in size.

I think it is great that they are finally increasing this limit, which has always felt like it has been there to cover AT&T's cell network. Other countries, with more solid networks have almost always been limited by AT&T and Apple. Great to see some new changes coming, with VoIP over 3G and video-streaming over 3G now (with the Slingbox app for example).

HotelPal is out with a new version, mainly a bug fix version but does include a more major feature. As Terry wrote in his review of TripDeck the other day, he asked for a "TripDeck Pro" app that could combine HotelPal, TripDeck and FlightTrack Pro. This isn't quite that, but it is on the way. HotelPal will now allow you to quickly add your reservations into TripDeck, adding some tighter integration between the two.

As usual, you can get the update from AppStore

I've been waiting for this day since May 15,  2009! That was the day that I reviewed the SlingPlayer Mobile 1.0 App for iPhone. On that day it was a bitter sweet review because while I had been anxiously waiting for the SlingPlayer app to ship, it shipped in a crippled WiFi only mode. Sure it worked great, but it would only work if you had a WiFi connection and not over 3G.

Today is a day to rejoice!

I just downloaded the update to SlingPlayer Mobile 1.2, which AT&T/Apple have now blessed to work over 3G and it's GREAT!

What's the big deal? Like I said, the WiFi only version worked fine, however for me it was an App that I hardly used. Don't get me wrong, I use my Slingbox all the time when I travel, but if I'm already on a WiFi connection it usually means that I've made it back to my hotel room and I can just watch on my MacBook Pro.

There have been plenty of times where I've found myself in "waiting" situations where I could have whipped out my iPhone and watched a 30 minute show on my TiVo, but just didn't have a WiFi connection to do so. A couple of weeks ago I had a 90 minute train ride where I had 3G coverage most of the way, but no WiFi. So these are times where I would definitely use the NEW Slingplayer Mobile App.

Now I have my DVR  and Live TV in my pocket (well actually on my belt) to watch just about anywhere, anytime.

it's gonna be a good day Tater! :)

With today's introduction of the iPad we should see an even faster growing collection of Apps on the App Store. Although the iPad can run existing Apps, we should see new apps that take advantage of the new screen real estate very quickly!

See my thoughts on the iPad here.

See the iPad specs and complete description here.

See the New iPad video here. You really have to watch the video to see how cool the interface to this device is!

Of course we'll have iPad News and App Reviews here as well.

UPDATE: Watch the Steve Jobs/Apple iPad Keynote Video here.

Photoshop.com mobile has been updated to version 1.1, sporting some brand new features. First off, you now have the ability to open videos from your Photoshop.com account into the app and play these in slideshows.

On the photo side, they have added brand new straighten, sharpen and contrast tools which work in the way that you drag your finger over the photo to set the amount of the effect.

As a finishing-touches bit, eight artistic borders are now available from the effects menu, letting you add some nice-looking frames before you export out.

You might remember Focalware from our review here. Well the folks over at Spiral Development wanted us to let you know that Focalware is now ON SALE for only $4.99 (half off) until the end of January!

Also they wanted to clarify the Compass support

With the 3GS model, Focalware uses Apple's internal compass to show the actual current position of sun and moon. With all earlier phones and the iTouch, we use a fixed compass graphic where the user moves the sun and moon for different times. Since we do not try to animate the compass in non 3GS devices, they are no less accurate with the results. The calculations are the same on any model. Typically non-3GS users rely on an external compass.

You can get it here from the App Store:

Apple has just released a FREE App to allow users to access and see their own MobileMe Photo/Movie Galleries as well as the galleries of any other MobileMe user that you happen to know the user name of. This will be great for having instant access to not only your photos, but the photos of friends and family. Also if you want to invite others to look at your photos you can navigate to a particular gallery and simply hit the Email button in the upper right corner to send a link to anyone to get directly to that gallery on the web.

One tap access to your photos

Although you can certainly have all your photos on your iPhone, but chances are you're probably going to have many more photos from events and occasions past that you want to see. So now instead of keeping them on your iPhone or iPod touch you can upload them to your MobileMe Gallery (mobileme account required) and see them in the app. Keep in mind that you'll also need an internet connection to access. them. However, once the photo(s) has been viewed it can be viewed offline from that point forward.

This is cool, but what makes it cooler is seeing the photos of others without having to go to their sites and navigate to their galleries. Now you can just tap the name of a friend and see any new photos that have been uploaded. For example you can see my photography by putting in the name "terrywhite".

You can get MobileMe Gallery here from the App Store:
