Adobe & DPS iPad App

Adobe has released a new FREE iPad App aimed at showing you how to create iPad Apps using the Adobe InDesign and the Digital Publishing Suite (DPS). The App itself was created with the DPS technology. Once you download the App you can download the 1st issue in the App and check it out. It’s loaded with videos and examples on the various overlay types that you can take advantage of when you create your App.

I also recorded this video a few weeks back before this App was available on how the process of building your own Apps works:

Starbucks adds Passbook Support in iOS 6

One of the Apps that Apple showcased when they introduced Passbook iOS 6 was the Starbucks App. So needless to say the Starbucks App has been one of the most highly anticipated Apps that people have been waiting for to be updated since iOS 6 shipped. Starbucks tweeted that they would have their update by the end of September and that didn’t happen. It could have been tied up in that pesky App Store approval process, but it’s here now and they did a good job. Unlike the Walgreens App, the Starbucks App lets you pick up to 10 of your favorite locations to pop up your card when you are nearby. As promised you’ll see your available balance and most locations can scan the barcode right off the screen (what are the other locations like the ones in DTW airport waiting for?).

I’m pleased to see this update although they still didn’t update it yet to take advantage of the iPhone 5 display size yet. As more Apps get updated Passbook will become more and more useful. In a year we’ll probably wonder how we ever lived without it. At this point there is a long way to go, but with the Starbucks App now on board we’re one step closer to having something great.

Understanding Passbook in iOS 6

Yesterday Apple released the much anticipated iOS 6 update. Major iOS updates typically precede the release of new iOS hardware. The iPhone 5 will be available this Friday and Apple usually wants to get the iOS update in the hands of existing users a couple of days earlier. They learned this lesson from a few years back when they released a new iPhone, new iOS update and MobileMe all on the same day. This trifecta crashed servers and caused long frustrating lines at retailers.

Passbook has promise, but could be better

Passbook is one of the cool new flashy features of iOS 6 that can hold your store discount cards, tickets, boarding passes, gift cards, etc. However, unlike my favorite app for doing this kinda stuff “CardStar“, you have to wait for the individual Apps to catch up. With CardStar you can add the cards in your want by either manually entering the barcodes or by scanning them in the App. However, with Passbook these tickets and cards are passed to the App from their native Apps or from your desktop Mac. It has only been a day since Passbook has been made publicly available and therefore there are only a few Apps that take advantage of it. Even the Apps that Apple showcased (namely Delta, Starbucks and even Apple’s own Apple Store App) have not been updated yet. This might seem kinda repetitive for those of you that were thinking Passbook was going to be your one stop shop like CardStar is. Unfortunately to add something to Passbook you will need the native App for that provider first. For example, with Walgreens you need their App on your iPhone first in order to add their Rewards card to Passbook. Now it seems that you can delete the native App after you’ve added the card to Passbook, but you’re probably going to want to keep the native App for future maintenance. To date I only have two Apps that allowed me to put something in Passbook. Actually I have five if you include United, American Airlines and Fandango, but I don’t have any upcoming flights on United and AA and I don’t have a Passbook compatible theater nearby for Fandango that I’m aware of (Fandango, a list would be nice!). The two that I have working are Target and Walgreens. With Target I was able to send their mobile coupons over to Passbook and with Walgreens I was able to send over their Rewards card. Seems like a lot of work to setup, but it does work. The benefit of these extra steps is that Passbook is very location aware and can display the pass automatically when you’re say near your Walgreens or Airport. This isn’t always implemented well either. I have two Walgreens that are about the same distance from me. However, the Walgreens App only lets you send over one location to Passbook at a time. So if I’m near the one Walgreens the Rewards card will pop up, but if not I’ll have to bring it up manually. Not a big deal, but it would be nice for it to recognize any Walgreens that I walk into or at least a few of them in my area (perhaps 5 favorites).

The Bottom Line

Although Passbook may not be what you thought it was, it’s not a bad solution. As time goes on and all of our favorite Apps support it, it will only get better. I’m also expecting Apple to tweak it as needed too.

Apps From My “Using An iPad in a Digital Photography Workflow” Class

I’m about to head into my session at Photoshop World Vegas 2012 on “Using the iPad in a Digital Photography Workflow”. As with most things the iPad and Digital Photography Apps are fast moving and get updates all the time. So I figured I would list the Apps I recommend and will show in the class here so that attendees not only see my recommendations from the workbook, but also the newer ones I’m using that didn’t make it into the workbook. In no particular order here they are:

Adobe Photoshop Touch

Version 1.3 brings the Retina Display support and high resolution file support that you’ve been asking for:

  • Retina Display Support: See your images like never before with the Retina display on the new iPad.
  • Higher resolution capabilities: Work on high-resolution images while maintaining the highest image quality. Supports images up to 12 megapixels.
  • Two new languages: Russian and Brazilian Portuguese.
  • Two new Effects: Shred and Colorize

Easy Release

My model release App of choice for both iPad and iPhone.

iTunes

Contract Maker Elite

I use Contract Maker Elite for my other contract such as my Print Release. It’s the most customizable App that I know of and basically lets you create a contract with virtually as many fields, popups, images, signatures as you need.

iTunes

Sylights

I use Sylights for making Lighting Diagrams on my iPad and sharing them with others.

iTunes

ShutterSnitch

Every time I show shooting with my Nikon D7000 and the EyeFi Mobile Pro X2 Card wirelessly to my iPad, someone always ask which App is that. It’s called ShutterSnitch. I use it both with the Eye-Fi Card and the Nikon WT-5a module on my Nikon D4. Sure Eye-Fi has their own Free App, but it’s just not as functional as ShutterSnitch.

iTunes

Photosmith

It’s the closest thing to having the Lightroom Library Module on your iPad. Import, manage, organize, rate and then sync to Lightroom.

iTunes

Adobe Revel

Adobe Revel is a cloud service that lets you sync your photos between all your Macs and iOS devices. I now use the iPad app as my portfolio app as it works directly with Lightroom 4.

iTunes

PosePad

PosePad let’s you create a visual shot list containing images of poses that you want to remember to capture during your next shoot.

iTunes

DSLR Remote HD

Although there is no way to directly connect your camera to your iPad to shoot tethered, DSLR Remote HD let’s you do it with a computer in the middle. You connect your compatible DSLR to your laptop via a USB cable and then you can remotely control it wirelessly with your iPad. See your Live View, make setting adjustments, and fire the shutter. See your recently captured images right on your iPad and share them.

iTunes

PhotoSync

I use PhotoSync on a regular basis to wirelessly transfer images from my iPad to my computer or from iOS device to iOS device.

Facebook App Gets A Speed Update (FINALLY)!

To say that the Facebook App on iOS was slow is like saying that the sun is hot. It started to lag so bad that I stopped using it. I started using the mobile web version instead. When I got a push notification and tapped on it I would see the Facebook App load and just sigh knowing that I’d have to wait a couple of minutes before I could see what it was that I was being notified about.

Why was it so slow?

Facebook is a big company with lots of cash! So why would such a high profile social networking company have such a bad App? Your guess is good as mine. I can only guess that it just wasn’t that important to the powers that be. Perhaps Mark doesn’t use an iPhone. If he did, I doubt that he would have allowed the experience to be so bad. The problem was that the original App wasn’t a native objective-c App (at least that’s my understanding) and this new one is.

Is it faster?

A first glance, YES! It is definitely faster than the previous version, but they would have to work pretty hard for it not to be. Is it fast? Well that’s a different question. While it is faster, I still don’t consider it to be “fast.” I would say that now it’s probably usable.

Any other new features?

Sadly no. I was disappointed to see that on the iPad there still isn’t much of an improvement. For example, Pages still don’t have Timeline support on the iPad. So with this update it seems that they spent all of their time on speed and I welcome that! It’s still kinda embarrasing for a company the size of Facebook not to support their own new features in their own App, but it is what it is.

This goes out to ALL of the social media sites that have Apps. Please make your Apps at least as functional as your website. It’s a shame that the mobile web version of your Apps offer more than your native Apps!
