Every time I review a PDF app for the iPad, the comment section of that post quickly fills up with comments like "yeah that's great, but what about PDF forms?" I've been a fan of the great work being done on Apps and in particular PDF apps by Readdle, Inc. and as promised they have delivered the long awaited PDF forms support. Their latest App, PDF Expert now allows you to fill in standard Adobe PDF forms right on your iPad.

Putting it to the test

To test this in a real world scenario I fired up Safari on the iPad and did a search for 1040EZ (sorry to depress you with a tax form ;) ). I figured I would quickly find a tax form in PDF that had form fields on it and as I expected, a hit came right up. I tapped the "Open in PDF Expert" button and like magic the Form was there and most importantly Fillable! Fantastic! This latest version also supports Printing and Saving Copies of your PDF forms filled in. I did both without incident. Then I started thinking about what my workflow would be for those times when I want a PDF form on my iPad that's NOT on the web. Sure I could plug in a sync one over, but I don't want to have to bring iTunes into the mix every time or have to be on a WiFi network with my computer. Then I remembered that PDF Expert has great support for Dropbox and more importantly now you can setup a 2 way Dropbox Sync folder. I did that and again it worked like magic. I could put a form in my new folder from my laptop and tap the sync button in PDF Expert and the form was there. Fill it out on the iPad, sync it and then I can access that form anywhere I have access to Dropbox. It just works! Yes it even works with PDF forms that have built-in calculations. Hoorah!

Keep in mind that PDF Expert does more than just forms. It was initially designed to let you do a full range of PDF annotations and markup. Adding Forms support makes this a complete solution and the only one that many people will need!

If you have a need to be able to access and fill out PDF forms on your iPad, wait no longer! PDF Expert is the first and currently ONLY App that does this on the iPad!
