8 Ball Pool™

Fill Your Pool Need Right from Your iPhone

8ball

I’ve always had a love for pool. I’ve never been particularly good at it, but that hasn’t stopped me from spending countless hours racking, breaking, and putting a little “English” on the cue ball. Recently a friend of mine told me that he has been absolutely addicted to this pool game that he put on his iPhone. I’ll try any App once so I downloaded it and man was he right! I haven’t been able to put this game down! Any free time that I have I’ve found myself grabbing my phone for the next challenge. With multiple “billiards”, people from around the world to play with, and the ability to challenge your friends 8 Ball Pool will keep you playing and coming back for the foreseeable future.

How It Works

8 Ball Pool uses an in depth yet easy to understand system to make game play lifelike. You start at a level 1 player meaning brand new to the game with no experience. The game gives you a set amount of coins, which are the virtual currency used to buy your way into rounds and thus becoming half of the prize winnings. As your play increases, and as you win more games you advance your ranking. On top of advancing your play and coins you also gain new “billiards” to play at (requiring a higher buy in) allowing you to play against more advanced competitors. The points, and wins add up quickly as you make your way through the billiards from London, to Moscow, and beyond.

The competitors come from all over the world. When you select to play a random person you are given the luck of the draw of competitors. You may be a level 5 player playing a level 15 player or higher. The game syncs real time with it’s servers so you have to have an internet connection of some kind.  Additionally you can challenge friends however this really works best when the friend is with you because the game has a time limit (we’ll get to that later) and you both have to be active.

Game Play

Who breaks is randomly decided unless you rematch an opponent in which case you take turns. After the break whoever puts in the first ball decides who will get what set of balls to shoot for. The game is played by moving the virtual pool stick around the screen to get the proper shot of the ball you want. Once the proper angle has been obtained force for the shot is controlled by “pulling” down the pool stick on the left side of the screen. The further down you pull it, the harder it will get hit. “English” is applied by tapping the white cue ball in the upper right corner of the game and then placing the red dot on the cue ball appropriate to where you want your English applied. Be careful to monitor the green ring that is slowly disappearing around your name when it’s your turn. This is your timer. If you don’t shoot the ball before the green ring runs out, your forfeit your turn and your opponent has “ball in hand” which means that they can place the cue ball anywhere on the playing surface that they would like for their next shot. All of the normal rules of pool apply to this game. You have to hit your own ball first when taking a shot (stripes or solids), the 8 ball is shot last, and you don’t want to “scratch” or put the cue ball in a pocket. Because of the timer game play moves fairly quickly and the quick tempo keeps the game fun. I sometimes wish that they would have given a little more time on the timer but I think that’s to be expected.

The Bottom Line

This is a very, very addicting game, especially if you enjoy pool at all. I think I have spent quite a few hours playing this game already and I’ve only had it a week or so. The challenge of winning the games, advancing your player ranking, and unlocking new billiards makes for an exciting and rewarding game that will keep you coming back day after day.

4 Pics 1 Word

4 Pics 1 Word

Here’s an interesting game that my friend Rita turned me on to. It’s called 4 Pics 1 Word. The concept is simple. The game displays 4 pictures that all have 1 thing in common and you have to guess what that one thing is. You’re given a bunch of scrambled letters as well as a number of empty boxes so that you know how many letters are in the word. You can guess all you want and it doesn’t affect your score. However, if you can’t move on until you guess the right word. Some are very easy to figure out and some made me give up to the point of using my accumulated points to buy letters in the word. It’s a good way to kill some time and like I said some pics will really have you thinking. I played side-by-side with my friend and we noticed that the pics come up in a random order. Also some of the pics are used in multiple groups of 4. You’ll breeze through most of these, but there will be some that make you scratch your head, put your iPhone down and walk away to think about it and do something else. If you’re stuck and need help you can also post the one you’re stuck on to Facebook to ask for help. It’s free and worth a download. Grab 4 Pics 1 Word today.

Devil's Attorney

Devil’s Attorney

If you’re looking for a new game to play on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch this weekend, you should check out Devil’s Attorney. My friend Rita recently turned me onto this addictive game and I’ve been playing it ever since. The way the game works you’re an Attorney and you’re just starting out. You have a shabby apartment and office and you start taking cases. With each case there’s a prosecutor, witness(es), evidence and sometimes expert witnesses. It’s your job to use the “skills” at your disposal to knock out the prosecutor, evidence, etc. You have Cross-Examine, Interrogate, Patronize, Analysis (to use against evidence), Expert Analysis, and even things like Mesmerize and Tamper with Evidence. Each one of these Actions costs points from your starting level of 9 points per game. Each one of things you’re attacking also has points associated with it and your case has a point level assigned to it. Your objective is to use your actions to reduce the damage that can be inflicted by the other side. For example, if you use your Expert Analysis and successfully take out the Evidence the Expert will also disappear. Then the only ones left that can inflict damage are the Prosecutor and Witnesses. Keep using your available actions until you’ve used all your points for that round and hopefully you either completely eliminate the other side or significantly reduce their ability to hurt your case. As you win each case you get paid. The more money you have the more things you can do like upgrade your apartment and office. The more cases you win you also receive gifts from your client that help you get more Actions or points.  The game play requires you to THINK about your available actions and the damage that can be inflicted by the various components of the other side. It definitely takes strategy and to think ahead.

The cases get harder as you advance. You’ll really have to think about your available actions and the points necessary to win your case.

This game is Universal and works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

t Chess Pro for iPad and iPhone

A friend of mine received an iPad for Christmas and she was looking to me for a recommendation for a good Chess game. Although I hadn’t played chess on my iOS devices before, I figured that there were probably “tons” of good chess games for iOS. I was actually appalled by how bad the selections were. Chess games have been around for YEARS! The one that ships on the Mac is great. Looks gorgeous and it works. However, when it comes to iOS the selection was not as good as I assumed it would be. I wasn’t looking for much…

  • I wanted a good looking board with good looking pieces
  • I wanted multiplayer support either via Game Center or wirelessly/internet
  • I wanted the basic features for beginners such as hints, take backs, etc.

The above listed features are not revolutionary and have been around in chess games for as long as I can remember. First off most of the games I found had very bad looking (line drawing type) graphics. This is what surprised me the most. Most didn’t offer multiplayer support. However, I did finally find one (actually she found it first). It’s t Chess Pro. It meets all my basic requirements and it works great via Game Center so that you can play your friends either in the same room or across the globe. Her only disappointment was that there wasn’t more fanfare when you beat the computer! :-)

You can set the difficulty level and this is a Universal App so that it’s native to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. There are LOTS of options beyond the ones I wanted. The only thing I’d like to see added is the ability to actually drag you piece to make the move. As far as I can tell you can only tap the piece and then tap where you want to move it to. Otherwise, if you’re looking for a great iOS chess game, this is it!
