Camera+ is Back in the Store with Updates!

Camera+ 2.0Back in August I had a review of Camera+ up, just a day after it got pulled from the AppStore for a secret feature that you could enable, assigning the volume control buttons on the iPhone as the shutter control button. This was a bit sad to see as the app is brilliant. This is why I am now very pleased to be able to review an update to the app, Camera+ 2.0, which is now available again in the App Store!

This review is very much going to focus on what is new in Camera+ 2.0 and if the changes are for the better or not.

Touch Exposure & Focus

Why leave the best until last? The most brilliant new feature in the update, which makes Camera+ my favorite photo application currently out there. Sure, the built-in camera application lets you touch to focus and in a way do touch exposure as well, however it will measure the light at the point of focus. Of course this means that you either get a perfectly exposed photo, or one that is in focus.

The beauty here is that you can control both exposure and focus separately and the way it works isn’t all that bad. Focus is, like in the built-in camera app, done by tapping anywhere in the scene. To set the exposure, you touch with a second finger at the same time as you are focusing. Being able to set these independently is just amazing to me and will make iPhone photos much better. The only downside is that the control is slightly clunky while trying to hold the iPhone still and then take a photo at the same time.

Note: This feature is only available on the iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 running iOS4.

Square Allows The Little Guy To Accept Credit Cards on iDevices

Any business owner will tell you that you that they have to provide multiple ways for their customers to pay. Accepting credit cards can be the key in many cases to getting the sale. Although we've seen a few credit card processing Apps for iOS devices, all the ones I've seen to date require you to setup a merchant account (no big deal) and/or pay monthly fees. It's the monthly fees that have kept me from doing this. I was already paying a monthly fee to Propay to accept credit cards individually and to Paypal (Virtual Terminal) for my non-profit organization. I didn't want to have to incur yet another monthly charge for my very low volume of transactions. Leave it to my non-techie sister to turn me on to this gem. Square allows just about any US based person to accept credit cards on their iOS devices WITHOUT having to pay monthly fees. You download the App, setup your account and you're in business.

How does it work?

First step is to download the App. You can't really do anything without it. Once you download the Square App you can setup your account right in the App itself. You will be asked for some identity verifying questions similar to those that are asked when verifying your credit that only you would know. At that point you're pretty much ready to accept credit cards. Although the App lets you setup an account on the spot, you will still need to log into the website to "finish" the setup process to take full advantage of the service. From the site you can order your Card Reader (FREE) that plugs into your iDevice. You'll also be able to setup which of your bank accounts you want your funds automatically deposited into. Although I was all set and ready to go, I waited for the Card Reader to arrive before testing my first transaction. The Card Swipe thingy arrived within 5 days. You can enter the card data manually, but I wanted the full experience first :) The App is pretty slick and is Universal for all iOS devices. Authorizations can take place over 3G or a WPA protected WiFi connection. It's fast and easy. Just enter the amount, an optional description and swipe the card. Once the transaction goes through the funds will be deposited into your bank account the next business day (or how ever many days it takes your bank to clear the electronic transfer). Although there are no limits on the number or amount of the transactions, your initial account will be limited to $1,001 per week of transfers. Say you charge $1,500 in a week. Square will deposit $1,001 into your account the next day and the remainder within 30 days. You can request a higher transfer amount if you need one, but you might have to pay a fee for that.

The App Works Great

Although it's a Universal App, you get a few more features on the iPad than you do on the iPhone/iPod touch because of the larger screen real estate. While you can enter the amount, description and even take a photo on the iPhone of the item you're selling, on the iPad you can have predefined items to choose from. For example, I'll be using this for my computer users group. We have 7 levels of membership/renewals that each have a different price. I was able to set each one up and assign it a one-touch graphic on the iPad. This way if I'm processing a "New Member" app I can just tap the New Member Button to add that item to the transaction. That's another thing, on the iPad you can have multiple items on a single transaction and it will add them up for your single charge. Once the charge is authorized the person can sign right on the screen with their finger or a stylus. At this point you can sent an optional receipt via SMS or Email.

A few things I'd like to see

I think it's great that you can email a receipt, but I can't believe that they don't give you the ability to choose an existing contact to email to. You have to manually key in the email address each time. Although the App allows you to enter the card information manually, you have to "sign" at the end of the process. This is fine if the person you're charging is standing there. This doesn't work well for processing mail or phone orders. For those I just wrote "on file" to get past the signature screen. Lastly, the receipts are nicely geotagged (see a sample above and at the end of the post). This is fine for doing business in a public location. However, if I'm processing mail/phone orders from home I don't want my "home" address on the receipts. Luckily you can skip the receipt in those cases. Other than these few things, this App and Service totally rock!

The Bottom Line

If you're an individual or small business and you've wanted to accept credit cards but you don't do enough volume to justify paying a monthly fee, this is your answer. Square will save me about $50/month in fees that I was paying to my other two services. Their transaction fees are reasonable and I love the fact that this turns my iDevice into a credit card terminal for FREE!

Thank you Square for providing this solution for the rest of us :)

Word Lens – An Interactive Real-time Spanish/English Translator App

Every now and then an App comes along that makes me say "Whoa! How the heck did they do that?" Word Lens is the most recent one that left me speechless. I got an email from my buddy Colin Fleming suggesting that I take a look at this App. Now I get those kinds of emails daily from developers and friends. A quick look at the description and I went ahead and downloaded it since it was "Free". What I expected to happen next was that I would fire up the App and then take a picture of something and it wold translate it. It was at that point that I said, "holy S#$t!!!" I held my iPhone 4 up to a sign in my car dealership and it started translating the sign IN REAL-TIME without having to take a picture. OMG!!!! Not only did it translate the text, but it did so in place matching the size of the font and characters. Again, OMG!!! I don't speak Spanish, so I can't verify how good the translation is, but again OMG!!! Rather than continuing trying to explain it, here's a clip showing it in action:

It's AMAZING How Far Technology Has Come

I can't get over the fact of the way this thing works and it's doing it from a freakin' phone in my hand. OK, I've calmed down a bit. Now for a few details. First off the way they've set up this App is that you download it for free, but what you get for free is really just a demo. It will do the translation "backwards" so that you can see it work. If you like it and then want to use it the way it was intended to be used, you then do an in-app purchase of the languages you want to convert. Currently it only supports English to Spanish and Spanish to English. Each translation language is a $4.99 purchase. In other words if you want to do bi-directional translations it will cost you $10. While I don't have an issue with the price, I do have a slight issue with the model. I would prefer to see a "lite" version for free or ad sponsored that perhaps translates one language in one direction. Then if you like it, you can do the in-app purchase for the other direction and to turn off the ads. There's nothing technically wrong with their current model, it's just that people will download this expecting to be able to use it as is and you really can't unless you make a purchase. Otherwise, bring it on! Give me more language choices and I'll be an in-app purchasing son of a gun.

Once you've locked in on what you want translated you can FREEZE the image. It seems to be geared and small amounts of text (like signs) as opposed to paragraphs. I can definitely see lots of use cases for this technology. I showed it to my car dealer (a non techie guy) and his first response was, Wow! that would be great in a restaurant for the menu. As someone who travels globally for a living I can see this thing being used all over the freakin place. Perhaps next time I won't accidentally walk into the ladies room in Germany (you guys really do need graphical signs) :)

Monopoly_for_iPad

Monopoly Goes iPad! Finally!

Monopoly on the iPhone is one of my favorite games of all time. Although I did play it on my iPad by using the screen double feature my wish was for a native iPad version. I got my wish this week when Electronic Arts introduced Monopoly for iPad. That was one of the fastest App purchases I've ever made. I wasn't disappointed. It was worth the wait. Electronic Arts did a great job taking advantage of the iPad's screen real estate. There are new animations as well as new options to spice up the game play. First off you can play Monopoly as it was originally designed with all the normal rules in place. You can play against the computer (AI) or another player over WiFi or Bluetooth (on the iPhone or iPad version). There's even a "Tabletop" mode to allow you and your friends to gather around the iPad on a table and play each other. You can either listen to the built-in game music or build your own playlist from your music library. If you're the quiet type you can turn off the music and animations.

Game Play

The game play feels about the same as the iPhone version. I play on the "Hard" level and I still managed to beat the AI in the first game. Just like the iPhone version, Monopoly for iPad is "greedy" :) My strategy is to keep it broke by letting it out bid me on properties that it can't possibly get a monopoly on because I still own one of the other properties in the block. It also still offers some of the craziest trades that I wouldn't take in a million years. Although I know how to beat it, it's still a challenge because sometimes the dice just don't fall in your favor. This is what keeps me playing. I could win or lose and it's the joy of the game that makes it fun.

The new perks include the ability to choose the number of properties at start (defaults to none), Houses per Hotel (4 is the default) , House/Hotel Limit (on/off), What money if any goes under Free Parking (default is none), Initial Cash, Pass Go Salary ($200 default, Land on Go Salary (Normal or Double) and Auctions (on/off). The end game stats are a really nice touch too. The only thing I don't see is Game Center support (yet).

If you like Monopoly, you'll love this App!

eBay

eBay Mobile and eBay for iPad

eBay was founded in 1995 and quickly became one of the most popular destinations on the internet. I still rely on eBay any time I have gear to sell or I'm looking for a really good deal on some equipment. I saved over $1,000 buying my home theater sound system (new in the box) on eBay! Whether you're trying to sell something online or not or you're thinking of buying something, eBay is a great place to check prices and see what others are selling similar items for. Often times eBay can be a quick reality check for something you might think is worth a lot or worthless. The eBay Mobile App and the eBay for iPad App allows you to take the eBay experience with you wherever you go.

Price check in aisle three

With eBay Mobile on your iPhone you can use your iPhone's camera to scan the product barcode of an item you're holding to search eBay for that item. That feature alone is very handy and beats typing in text searches. Once the results are in you can look through everything, just auctions or just the ones offering a "Buy it Now" price. Buy it Now is great for shoppers that don't want to play the auction game and just want to buy what they find on the spot. The bar code scanning feature can also be used to help you quickly list your item for sale. When you scan the barcode it will bring in the title, category and stock photo. All you have to do is key in your description, set your price and length of auction and you're item is listed just that easily!

If you find a cool item that you want to share with others you can tweet it, post it to your Facebook wall or email it directly from within the App.

eBay on the Big Screen

eBay for iPad is great too. This App was designed for the iPad from the ground up and offers nice big image displays and descriptions. The iPad version is more designed for browsing, shopping and account management than selling. I guess they figure since the iPad doesn't yet have a camera there's no real way for a user to easily get their auction photos together for setting up the auction. Nonetheless I use the iPad version to monitor the auctions for items I'm selling and things I'm bidding on. I also use it for responding to questions about my items.

I understand not having selling abilities due to the lack of a built-in camera, however I'm scratching my head as to why there are no sharing features like the eBay Mobile version has. The other minor thing I'd like to see added is a "Total" for the items I'm selling.

The Bottom Line

If you buy things or sell things you should always compare prices on eBay. I've saved thousands over the years and made a decent amount on selling my older gear too. Having these Apps with you makes it much easier to check things out  and cast those last minute bids on the go.

Speaking of selling on eBay

Don't forget to check out the gear I'm selling on eBay this month here.
