eBay

eBay Mobile and eBay for iPad

eBay was founded in 1995 and quickly became one of the most popular destinations on the internet. I still rely on eBay any time I have gear to sell or I'm looking for a really good deal on some equipment. I saved over $1,000 buying my home theater sound system (new in the box) on eBay! Whether you're trying to sell something online or not or you're thinking of buying something, eBay is a great place to check prices and see what others are selling similar items for. Often times eBay can be a quick reality check for something you might think is worth a lot or worthless. The eBay Mobile App and the eBay for iPad App allows you to take the eBay experience with you wherever you go.

Price check in aisle three

With eBay Mobile on your iPhone you can use your iPhone's camera to scan the product barcode of an item you're holding to search eBay for that item. That feature alone is very handy and beats typing in text searches. Once the results are in you can look through everything, just auctions or just the ones offering a "Buy it Now" price. Buy it Now is great for shoppers that don't want to play the auction game and just want to buy what they find on the spot. The bar code scanning feature can also be used to help you quickly list your item for sale. When you scan the barcode it will bring in the title, category and stock photo. All you have to do is key in your description, set your price and length of auction and you're item is listed just that easily!

If you find a cool item that you want to share with others you can tweet it, post it to your Facebook wall or email it directly from within the App.

eBay on the Big Screen

eBay for iPad is great too. This App was designed for the iPad from the ground up and offers nice big image displays and descriptions. The iPad version is more designed for browsing, shopping and account management than selling. I guess they figure since the iPad doesn't yet have a camera there's no real way for a user to easily get their auction photos together for setting up the auction. Nonetheless I use the iPad version to monitor the auctions for items I'm selling and things I'm bidding on. I also use it for responding to questions about my items.

I understand not having selling abilities due to the lack of a built-in camera, however I'm scratching my head as to why there are no sharing features like the eBay Mobile version has. The other minor thing I'd like to see added is a "Total" for the items I'm selling.

The Bottom Line

If you buy things or sell things you should always compare prices on eBay. I've saved thousands over the years and made a decent amount on selling my older gear too. Having these Apps with you makes it much easier to check things out  and cast those last minute bids on the go.

Speaking of selling on eBay

Don't forget to check out the gear I'm selling on eBay this month here.

Gowalla 3.0: A Leaner, Meaner Check In Machine

It has been a while since we reviewed the Gowalla app for the iPhone here on the site and since we did, many updates have passed, this week however with the most major one that changes things up a bit.

Front and center with the new update is a brand new interface that is now truly gorgeous to look at but also helps with making the app easier to use. Where it was previously harder to get to, viewing friends check-ins (both all and nearby), your trips, own passport and even checking in, these areas are all available from the main tab bar.

Gowalla - Alamofire

When it comes to checking in specifically, this window has loads of improvements, the first being that Gowalla tries to calculate where you are checking in, based on your history and current location. Instead of having to choose from a list of spots first thing, you are now presented with the computed best guess for your sought check in.

Gift Plan: The Ultimate Gift List Manager App

It takes a lot to get me to look at another App in a category that I've already made a choice in. It takes even more to get me to switch to another App in the same category. However, if such an App comes along I'll gladly switch even if it means paying for the App and setting it up from scratch. On my iPhone I use the great Occasions App to manage reminders for birthdays and anniversaries. I use Nice List as a Christmas List App. I've been toying with Gifts HD as a Christmas Gift Management App on the iPad. Now I'm thinking of replacing two if not all three of these Apps with Gift Plan. The reason I say two and not all three is that I use Occasions as a reminder for lots of birthdays that I don't necessarily buy gifts for and I'll have to think about having all those contacts in the one App (Gift Plan). However, for any kind of Gift List management, Gift Plan just about nails it. The UI (user interface) is GORGEOUS and is very well thought out. Unlike the dozens of Christmas List Apps out there, Gift Plan makes sense to use all year long for any occasions that you buy gifts for. To get started Gift Plan can automatically pull in your Contacts from your iOS device or Facebook if they have birth dates filled in. As a matter of fact those are the only contacts it will see (more on that in a minute). You can of course add gift recipients manually. Once those contacts with birthdays have been imported you can then assign them to any other lists you want (Christmas, Anniversaries, Graduations, etc.). You can create any holidays or occasions you need. They can be annual or one time.

Gift Plan went beyond my expectations

I figured the usual stuff would be there like adding names, gifts, costs of the gifts, checking them off as you buy them, etc. However, I was pretty impressed by the attention to detail such as the ability to add SIZES, Likes and Dislikes. How freakin' convenient to have the person's various sizes for clothing right there on the spot. Also things like favorite colors, gifts they like and gifts they don't like. (please don't buy me another tie EVER. Please! :D ). There is passcode protection to keep prying eyes away. The App does push notifications (very key) as reminders come up and visually does a good job counting down the days till an event is here. There's also a nifty calendar view built right in. They thought of just about everything. However, there is one thing keeping me from giving this App a 5th star. It's actually the thing that drove me crazy about it and it's so simple (I'm sure they'll put this in an update right?). You can't import any of your contacts unless they have a birthday filled in! I guess for many this wouldn't be a problem, but here is where I ran into it as an issue: I have a few contacts that I buy annual holiday gifts for. These are business contacts and quite frankly I don't buy them birthday gifts. I wanted to add these contacts to my Christmas List, however they wouldn't even show up until I went in and put fake birthdays in their contact records. Sure I could have added them manually, but then I would have had to find pictures for them too. They are already in my contacts. I shouldn't have to enter them manually. The App should allow you to import ANY of your contacts whether they have a birthday filled in or not. I should be able to say Add Contact and choose it from the list just like all the other Gift List Apps do. (Please tell me I'm wrong and that you can already do this. If you can I can't find it). Other than that I can't really find anything wrong with the App. It rocks! My other wish is not a show stopper, but I would not only love to see an iPad native version of this App, but I want it SYNC with the iPhone version. Giving me an iPad version that doesn't talk with the iPhone version is useless. I want to be able to manage the lists I have on either device and have them update in the cloud with offline viewing of course.

See Which of Your Buddies is Playing Xbox with 1337pwn

No, I'm still not a gamer! However, I do like games :) I really like the Call of Duty Modern Warfare series and of course the recent release of Call of Duty Black Ops. While I was perfectly content playing these games on my Playstation 3 I learned that many of my colleagues were playing on the Xbox 360. The game is the same, but what's different between the consoles is the online play. PS3 users can play each other online and Xbox 360 users can play each other online, but not PS3 to Xbox or vice versa. As much as I did NOT want yet another gaming console, I went ahead and bought an Xbox 360 for the sole reason of being able to play online with people that I know. Since I'm not a gamer I'm not playing all the time. When I do play I'd like to play with friends. The problem is not knowing when my friends are online or not. This lead me to think, "I wonder if there's an app…"

1337pwn INXES Xbox Live Friends

This App solves the problem nicely. Once you enter your friends gaming tags you can at glance see who's online and what they're playing! This way if I'm in the mood to play but could take it or leave it, I can see if my friends are on and that would push me right over and start up the game and join in. You can see your friend's gamer card as well as detailed play history. The App is a Universal App, which means I can check from either my iPhone or my iPad depending on which one is handy. The functions are pretty basic and gives you the most important details about who is on or when they were last on and what they're playing. There is room for improvement though. I would LOVE to be able to configure a Push Notification for when certain friends are on AND playing Black Ops or any other specific game. That would really make me like this App even more. As it stands It's really good although sometimes it crashes inputing your friends. Once your list is built though you're all set and I haven't had a single issue since getting everyone in.

If you play Xbox Live games with others, you want this App!

Ringtone Wizard Pro

Yesterday's App Review was about an App that allowed you to create your own custom ringtones from the built-in loops. Today I'm reviewing a similar App for people that just want to use their songs. Ringtone Wizard Pro is all about creating iPhone ringtones from your music library on your iPhone. I've reviewed similar Apps in the past, but the thing that earns Ringtone Wizard Pro a spot on BestAppSite.com is that it seems to be the most full featured of the Ringtone Apps I've seen to date. I love the fact that you can turn on a fade with a simple on/off switch. I also love the user interface with simple sliders to pick the portion of the song you want to use as your ringtone.

It does the job

Not only does it work like the other Apps in this category with the same (Apple imposed) restriction of not being able to put the ringtone right on your iPhone from your iPhone, but in addition to allowing you to sync the ringtone back to your computer Ringtone Wizard Pro allows you to email it as well. While you'll still need to plug in at some point to get the ringtone back onto your iPhone I like the email option for sending it ahead of time. While the App definitely works as advertised I'd like a way to quick scrub to the end of your selection to hear how it fades out. Currently it seems like you have to play the whole ringtone to hear the ending. Otherwise I love this app!

You can get Ringtone Wizard Pro on sale for $0.99 here from the Ringtone Wizard Pro - Rocha Software
