10 Must Have Travel Apps

As a frequent traveler I'm always trying out new travel apps and although I've made a list like this in the past, I thought it was time to update you all with my latest picks.

TripIt

Every trip I take starts with an itinerary of some kind. Usually it involves a flight and a hotel at a minimum. I've been hooked on TripIt.com since day one for a one stop shop for managing all my travel plans. The beauty of TripIt is that they are not a travel agency. They don't actually book your travel. Instead you book your travel anyway that you want and then forward your confirmation emails to plans@tripit.com from your registered email address. All of your plans will be consolidated in one convenient spot. The TripIt app brings these plans to the palm of your hand complete with times, maps, directions and of course confirmation numbers.

You can get TripIt for Free here from the TripIt

FlightTrack Pro

Although TripIt does a great job of managing the whole trip, I rely on FlightTrack Pro for up to the minute flight and gate information. Not to mention that FlightTrack Pro also ties in directly to your TripIt account and pulls in your flights automatically. Push notifications from this app have saved me on more than one occasion. I couldn't imagine traveling by air without this app. FlightTrack Pro is a "+" app and takes full advantage of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

You can get FlightTrack Pro for $9.99 here from the FlightTrack

TimeScroller

Much of my travel is to different countries and different time zones. However, just because I'm in a different time zone doesn't mean that life stops back at the main office or at home and often I'm still in need of scheduling meetings that fit the best time for all parties. TimeScroller rocks for quickly showing and suggesting a meeting time that would work best fro the selected cities. You can even email the or propose a meeting/calendar invite right from the App.

You can get TimeScroller for $1.99 here from the TimeScroller

B&H Photo & Video Has an App

Mobile Safari is good, but a dedicated App is better. I was very happily surprised to see the NEW B&H Photo App appear in the App Store. B&H is the place where I buy 95% of my photo and video equipment. They are amazing to work with and have FANTASTIC customer service.

The App

The allows you to do what you would expect to do. You can search the store, look up prices and see reviews. You can buy products directly within the App and you can log in with your current B&H credentials to check your order status. Unfortunately the order status page loads as full size web page in the App as opposed to an optimized mobile version. Other than that I have no complaints and this App will definitely be going into my shopping folder. Thanks again for making it that much easier now to do more impulse shopping ;)

iReadPDF

iRead PDF

I’m certain that I haven’t seen every app in the App Store that will display PDF files on the iPad. But, I do have a few of them, and what I quickly noticed going through purchased app or free app, was that there was something poignantly missing for me in all of them.

I usually have numerous PDF files open and accessible while working on my laptop at any given time. Now that I use my iPad for work purposes, and sometimes in place of my laptop, I need an iPad app that does the same. What I found was that most apps allowed a library of PDF files stored in them, but when it came to viewing those PDF files, that was done only one PDF at a time. Going back and forth to open/close/open a PDF just would not work for how I needed to work. So, living the motto “There’s an app for that” I went searching for it (or them).

I soon found iRead PDF, by Aji, LLC, to be the app I have been wanting. iRead PDF is a PDF reader that sports tabbed viewing; in essence mimicking the tabs on the Safari Browser or a Creative Suite app like Photoshop. Thus, allowing multiple PDF files open and accessible at one time, like you would normally work.

Knowing that the iPad isn’t going to give me the exact same workflow that I’m used to with my laptop, it’s nice to get as close as possible. Even so, I was just happy that I could now have multiple PDFs open in a tabbed viewing structure, and from a free app at that.

Along with the tabbed viewing structure, expected scroll, zoom and gestures support, iRead PDF had many nice features that made working with it feel more like working with PDFs on my laptop.

There is a customizable toolbar to bring more of iRead PDF tools to your fingertips. Navigation tools like PDF Outline, Go To Page Number, Previous Page, First Page, Last Page, Next Page, Select (for copying content); from the Command Library.

Add Bookmarks (even with customized colors) to the opened PDFs for quick access to page location and customized views; view PDF links, Outlines (TOC-like), Highlights, Underlines, and view any other Annotations already within the PDF.

The Library pane is filled with expected features (Favorites, Search, Recents, New Docs, Browse, Unread), but also unexpected features of displaying a special icon if a PDF contains notations and allowing the addition of tags to the PDF.

While there are many way to get a PDF opened into iReader PDF, a companion Aji Reader Service desktop application is available for syncing PDF files on your computer with iReader PDF on your iPad.

While there are other PDF reader apps that do what they do and do it well, iRead PDF is an absolute must if you need multiple PDF files open at one time.

remote

Apple Remote Gets Some iPad Love

Apple released an update to one of my favorite Apps. It's the Remote app that can be used to remotely control iTunes or Apple TV over a WiFi connection. The App is now a Universal App and works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. I love this App because it's not only a good WiFi remote, but it presents you with a display of your iTunes library almost as if you were standing in front of your computer. It even lets you choose from your various Airtunes/AirPlay speakers. You can choose from anything in your Library and it also is a great remote for Apple TV. With Apple TV you can use finger gestures to swipe instead of having to click left, right, up or down. You can also use the larger keyboard when you need to input text into a search field. On the iPad this App is even more amazing in the way that it can display your Libraries contents and even edit playlists.

If you use iTunes or Apple TV this is a MUST HAVE App. You can get it for FREE here from the Remote
