CineXplayer

CineXPlayer

A little while ago I reviewed VLC for the iPad. At the time it was the only app that I used to play my .avi’s and Divx formats. Since then I have completely ditched VLC in favor of CineXPlayer and I bet you will too!

Why the switch?

So why was I even looking for a new app for my video playback? The reason is twofold. First, I review apps, that’s what I do, so I’m always checking out new apps for you guys (and girls). Second (and more importantly) I was having issues with HD playback with the other app. Sometimes I would get random freezing mid playback and the app would completely crash. I have been using CineXPlayer for a couple of months now and not once has it even stuttered during HD playback. So that’s why I was testing CineXPlayer, but there were other huge advantages that have made me happy. Transfer time for the video files to the iPad is faster. I performed an unscientific speed test where I transferred the same video file to CineXPlayer, and then to VLC. It took twice as long to transfer to VLC as it did to CineXPlayer. Secondly while the code isn’t a universal binary (same app working on both iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad) there is a version of CineXPlayer for the iPhone. It has the same UI (user interface) feel and plays back .avi videos just as well.

Make the UI Attractive!

If I have any complaint at all about CineXPlayer, it’s that the UI is bland. You get rows with your video titles, no option for thumbnails or previews. With the introduction of Airplay in iOS 4.2 I’m waiting for streaming integration to be added to this app. Other than that, this app has everything that could want.

Angry Birds Seasons HD is Here

What started out as a Halloween themed version of my favorite iOS game has now evolved into a "holiday" themed version. Angry Birds is one of the most successful games on iOS. I'm not a gamer and I look forward to playing it and the new levels whenever I have the time. I bought the Halloween version without a second thought not so much because I'm into Halloween (I'm not), but because it would give me the chance to play my game again. Everyone that bought the Halloween version was treated to a free update last week as the game has now become Angry Birds Seasons. This update has introduced a Winter or Christmas themed layout. There are more challenges and it's a nice refresh to a game that I thoroughly enjoy. It also now has Game Center support in iOS 4.2.

What's the object of the game?

If you're new to Angry Birds at first the game might look a little silly. However, what you don't see at first glance is that the game is really all about strategy. You're given a set number of "angry birds" and a slingshot. You use your finger to pull back the slingshot and launch the bird at the structure that the "pigs" are hold up in. Each bird has its different properties. Some can drop bombs. Some explode like grenades. The yellow ones have accelerated flight and hitting power, some are boomerangs,  etc. Tapping the screen while the bird is in mid flight will expose the bird's particular powers. The reason I say it's all about strategy is you have to plan where to hit the structure to do the most damage and smash all of your pigs. That's where the addiction comes in. You'll quickly find yourself saying "one more try". Hours later you'll wonder where the time went.

One bit of frustration

This version seems to be counting down the days til Christmas. While that in and of itself is no big deal, the developer has decided to only allow you to go to the next level on the next day. That's right! Once I complete the level for December 6, I can't play level "7" until December 7. Now I suppose if you really really wanted to play all the levels immediately a quick change to your iPad's date might do the trick (I haven't tried this). While I'm willing to play one level a day, it would be nice if we had the "option" to turn this off and play all the levels we wanted. At least the way it's currently implement it keeps me from getting sucked in for hours at a time :)

Gifts HD

Although I did all my holiday gift management with an iPhone App last year I was intrigued by this new iPad App so I decided to give it a try. Make no mistake about it. Gifts HD tries to cover all the bases for your holiday gift planning, budgeting and list management. This App even has something that I haven't seen before in an iPad App. It has multiple user support. One of the things I had hoped to see in iOS 4.x for iPad was multiple user support. I'd be a lot more apt to let someone borrow/play with my iPad if they weren't going to have immediate access to all of my information including emails. Although multiple user support is still my wish for iOS, it's a reality in Gifts HD today! You start off by creating a new user. Each user can have his/her own passcode – brilliant! Even if you're the only user of your iPad you can still setup multiple users (or lists) for different shopping needs. Once you're setup/logged in you then add the people that you're buying for to that list. For each person you can then add one or more gifts. Besides the usual stuff of adding gifts, keeping track of what you bought/wrapped and sent, Gifts HD does a few things that I thought were really nice perks over other Apps in this category. You can see faded countdown in the background for how many shopping days left till Christmas and/or Chanukah. Besides that there is a built-in calculator for doing your own quick calculations beyond the built-in budgeting feature. However, the feature that I thought was the most thoughtful is that once you build your shopping list you can bring up an integrated web browser and search for each item on your list! This is awesome for online shoppers like myself.

The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a full-featured holiday shopping App for the iPad, this is it! My only complaint with the UI (user interface) is that you have to go to several screens to do things like enter gifts and then check them off.  I'd like to see the gift list and all checking off (bought, wrapped, mailed, spent, etc.) done in one window/pad. I can get used to the way it works now, but the thing that is driving me crazy is the crashing. I would have given it a 4 star rating if it didn't crash so often and a 5 star rating if it were a little more streamlined. Until they do an update though be prepared to re-launch the app regularly. It's a BRILLIANT app, let's hope they make it more stable.

Color & Shape

A few weeks ago I wrote about the top 5 apps that make my toddlers happy. In that review I gave some examples of apps that my twins not only thought were fun to play or use, but also taught them things. After all if they don’t think an app is fun they will lose interest quickly, no matter how good of a learning tool it is. It’s my goal as a parent to give my children every opportunity to succeed possible, so when an app comes along like Color and Shape that not only keeps their attention but also helps them learn I take notice.

K.I.S.S

If you’re not familiar with this term it stands for keep it simple stupid. The developer did a great job of keeping it simple with this app. Upon launching the app, you get a nice splash page with two options COLORS or SHAPES. It doesn’t get much simpler than that. The first option is colors so I’ll start there. Inside you find three rows of spheres with distinct colors. The background is filled with a scene from what appears to be a field of grass with lady bugs and birds. Touching any of the 12 different spheres prompts the English (read: British) narrator to reveal the color. All of the colors are strait forward and very easy to distinguish. That’s it. That’s all there is to this page. It does exactly what you would think it would do; it tells you the colors. The other page is the shapes. Again three rows with 12 objects for your toddler to touch. This time the background is a sunny beach view complete with seagulls and a rainbow. The rows in the shapes page are broken down into three different types. The first row is your standard square, circle, rectangle and triangle. The second or middle row is where it gets interesting. It starts with pentagon, then you get parallelogram! Whoa. It took me a little by surprise the first time my son touched that shape. I didn’t expect an app that teaches basic colors and shapes to have parallelogram in it. I was afraid that my kids might stumble over the name and lose interest, but to my surprise they picked it right up and didn’t have a single problem with the name. The rest of the shapes are strait forward and what you would expect from an app with a name like Color and Shape. Again, they got strait to the point with the shapes page. It does exactly what you would expect it to do. Tell the shape name as it’s touched.

Almost Perfect

This app does exactly what it says that it will do. It shows, and tells colors and shapes in an easy manner that any toddler can pick up. A couple of things that I’d like to see in the next update: First I would like to be able to change the shape of the colors to something other than spheres. The spheres work just fine, but the ability to change the shape might help retain younger children’s attention. The next thing I would like to see or hear in this case, is different voices. Just like when using a GPS, I’d like to be able to choose my desired voice. While the British accent isn’t heavy enough to cause a problem, it’d be nice to have the option. Lastly I’d like to see some sort of game addition where the child hears a color or shape said aloud, and then touches the screen to match the corresponding color or shape. I have already done this with my children aloud, and maybe that’s the point of not adding a “game” feature, to keep you engaged with your children. Either way, it would be a nice addition.

The Bottom Line

At first I thought my children would lose interest quickly with this application because of its simplicity. With all of the other app options on my iPad that include animations, video, and interactions I thought that they might pass this app by for something else if given the choice. I was surprised. A few days after first playing with it, I woke one morning to my 4 year old son sitting in bed next to me saying “sphere”. He woke up early and decided to get the iPad off of my nightstand. The app he chose all on his own? Color and Shape. I can honestly say that I feel my twins have a better handle on their colors and shapes because of this app. If you have toddlers, I would definitely recommend it.

Calculator HD for iPad

When the iPad came out there were a few Apps that Apple didn't port over. For example, on the iPhone and iPod touch you have a built-in Weather App, Stocks App and a Calculator. For whatever reason Apple chose to leave those Apps off the iPad and needless to say 3rd party developers didn't waste any time filling the void. There are several weather apps for the iPad. There are also several calculator Apps available. I've gone through three so far. Keep in mind that there hasn't been much in terms of revolutionary features of a calculator in the last 20 years. They do what they do. So why go through three of them? Since they all pretty much do the same basic things, I'm looking for aesthetics and bells and whistles that go over the top. I liked my first two because they filled the screen. The second one I tried had a multiple skins that you could choose from depending your color choices and lighting conditions.

Why I like Calculator HD for iPad

I like this one because you can not only configure which calculator you get in portrait and landscape orientations (basic, scientific, basic with tape, etc.), but you also get the added benefit of a electronic "paper" tape. When adding a list of numbers an on screen tape is a handy way to know that you didn't miss anything. While there's also a Note Pad mode that puts a scratch pad to your right, I probably wont' use that feature much. It's nice to have though. The only thing I would like to see is the ability to have the calculator fill the screen. There is a lot of fluff around the edges with pretty pictures and while I do appreciate pretty pictures that space could be used to make the whole thing bigger (as the other calculators I have do) and therefore making the buttons easier to press and the display easier to read. Don't get me wrong, the current interface certainly isn't small, but it could be bigger is all I'm sayin'.
